NPEs

Posted on July 27, 2023July 27, 2023 by Adrienne Smith

The other day I sat down and indulged myself in a bit of genealogical wandering. I have a suspected NPE in the Mullady line on my paternal grandmother’s side due to the shared matches. There are a group of matches on FTDNA, siblings, one of whom has their results on Ancestry. I’ve corresponded with this person before and they have told me that they are definitely not related to us in the recent past because they have already done their whole family tree in depth. I think I suggested that we must be related more closely than that, but was brushed off.

I’ll call this match SR. SR shares with my father:

• 21cM (32cM unweighted) on Ancestry

• 34cM on FTDNA

• SR’s sister shares 21cM on FTDNA

• SR’s brother shares 57cM on FTDNA

Assuming this is an NPE, there is a half relationship. Ancestry suggests SR is:

• 21% H2C1R or H3C

•22% H2C1R or H1C3R

20% H3C1R

SR was born halfway between my father and myself so it is unclear if they are a generation removed or not. They are definitely not 2 generations apart so I can cross off H1C3R.
