Last week I took an excellent GRIP (Genealogical Institute of Pittsburgh) course in Genealogical Organization from Kelli Jo Bergheimer. Although it wasn’t exactly what I expected, I learned a lot from the course. I have so many papers, photos and digital information floating around and was hoping that the course would go over where to put it all. Instead, it was about working smarter and more effectively. Kelli did cover some of the information I was interested in, but expanded it to so much more. She went over calendars, genealogy software, Feedly, email groups, blogs, and calendars and that was only day 1! The other days were about DNA matches, Leeds charts, what to put in a DNA report, getting organized for an archive trip, the Shared cM Project, browsers, and some case studies and making a preservation plan. One day was spent on learning and moving things into One Note. I’ve used One Note in the past and like it, but I’m not sure how much effort I want to put into transferring so much information there. Currently, I use Apple Notes and it does the job, but with less bells and whistles. I’m going to experiment and see if One Note does a better job. Unfortunately, I now have more on my to-do list than when I started the class!
